If you are like me and live in the Midwest, winter will not leave us alone. Cold temps and snow are still here, but I say “who cares, go out and enjoy God’s beauty in nature.”
A very beautiful view of a snow covered lake right next to the trail.
Lately I have been busy with RC and family, also there has been real hit or miss weather for riding. I hate riding my trainer, so I’m losing all my hard work from last year. Yesterday it was 35 degrees and the snow wasn’t too thick to ride in, so we busted out the bikes. Man, I hate being stuck inside, so it was good to get out. Shortly into the ride, I realized that my base fitness has dropped. One thing about riding in the snow is that there is zero recovery. Your going slow, and working WAY harder, with no breaks. Even the downhills you have to pedal.
The south facing trails were a little more wet and sloppy, but it was all fun. It was just about perfect conditions. The wet muddy feel, but not really muddy and sticky. It was a true test of technical riding ability. These trails are technical in the dry, add slow speeds and no traction, you feel pretty awesome when you make it up the climbs, or down the rock gardens. For me, it was a major mental and physical test as well, an hour in, with 40 minutes to go, I had serious jelly legs going. In the hour and 40 minute ride, we only coasted for a total of 60 seconds, so it was pretty intense.
The more north facing trails, the more snow they had. I’m ready for the snow to leave, but being out there in nature, it sure is a beautiful sight. My riding partner, Craig, he gave me the motivation I have been needing to get on my trainer more. I’m not a person that likes to be the slow guy, and he pretty much left me behind and had be burning the whole ride, but I made it. I tried staying close at times, but I had to back it down and pace myself.
What a great ride and a great workout. I want to encourage you, if you are in a place where it is cold and your stuck inside. Man….just do something outside, it’s good for the mind and soul. Bundle up and just do it!!!!
Anyways, hope you all are doing good and enjoying life, our time on this Earth is short. Thanks for reading and God Bless!
You should get a bike with those balloon size tires so you can float on the snow
